The Collectif Ex-Placé DPJ’s Grandir et bien partir project aims to develop a set of tools for youths in care transitioning to adulthood. These are practical tools that are easily accessible to both youths and the social workers involved in their daily lives. An innovative project that the Fondation is delighted to be providing funding of up to $25,000, to provide better support to youths in the care of the DYP about to be living independently.

The purpose of Collectif Ex-Placé DPJ, a group comprised of former youths in care, is to raise awareness about the challenges faced by youths who were formerly in care and to leverage their experience to help other young people. The idea for the Grandir et bien partir project sprung from that belief. Financial support from the Fondation will enable the organization to create a guide containing all types of resources for youth in the care of the DYP and help smooth their transition to adulthood.

Whether we’re considering the financial aspect, education, everything related to health or  assistance with housing, youths in the care of the DYP have so many needs, and there are also so many resources and activities available to them. The goal of this project was to make them better known. And then identify the gaps and pinpoint what still needs to be offered, so we can find ways of creating – with various players and stakeholders – whatever is still missing for an optimal transition to adulthood.

The guide will be available in hard copy so as to avoid any technological barriers that would prevent access to it. It was developed by a group of some fifteen participants who meet regularly for collaborative workshops. Eventually, members of Collectif Ex-Placé DPJ involved in the project want to make the guide not only available to the largest number of youths possible, but also to share it with other young people at youth centres.

By making young people aware of all the mapped resources presented in our guide that do exist by the age of 14 or 15, they will then know about the support ecosystem available to them and it will certainly  ease their transition to adulthood.

There’s nothing more beautiful than seeing teenagers and adults rallying together and showcasing all the skills and knowledge they have developed through their unusual life journey to help other young people. As the Grandir et bien partir project was designed by young people for young people, it will certainly factor into its success. The Fondation is proud to support this sharing of knowledge within the same community of youth in care.
