Developing your self-esteem is absolutely fundamental. When an organization provides support to a youth with a set end date, that young person may experience the same feeling of abandonment as when they left the system if they are not ready to be independent and have not developed their self-confidence. By supporting youths at every step of their personal journey, from emergency to independence, Renaître de la Rue keeps a connection with them for as long as necessary.

The Fondation is proud to fund a Renaître de la Rue project with $35,000 that will provide personalized co-construction support with youths in the care of the DYP who are homeless or in a precarious situation.
One in three young people who have been placed in youth protection will experience an episode of homelessness in their life*. Renaître de la Rue, an initiative by Mikah Youbi, who was himself formerly in the care of the DYP and lived on the street, focuses on the most vulnerable youths aged 16 to 30 with this intervention. Purpose of the organization: Help youths navigate the existing support ecosystem so they can find the resources suited to their needs, build their self-esteem and start living independently when they feel they are ready.
Individual follow-up tailored to each person
For youths in the care of the DYP, transitioning towards an autonomous life is a pivotal period that brings many challenges. Young people in youth protection lack confidence, are often unaware of their own worth and dreams so they don’t necessarily have the tools, knowledge or skills needed to face the future when they turn 18.
Renaître de la Rue goes out to meet youths in a precarious situation to develop personalized support with them. There is no eligibility criteria or set end date for follow-up. In doing so, they try to rebuild the esteem and confidence in these young people through a solid network of support and provide them with transformational support to help them develop their full potential.
Analyze one’s own experience to bounce back
Thanks to the Fondation’s support, the organization has set up a research-supported peer researcher project that focuses on empowering the youths. In partnership with research teams at UQAM, Boscoville and Université de Montréal, different community groups and other community stakeholders, the project helps young people find their own solutions for reintegrating into society, based on their personal experiences.
Renaître de la Rue aims to develop and implement innovative approaches to adequately meet the needs of young people based on their own accounts and experiences.
We are proud to fund a project that plays a vital role in the care and support of young adults in difficulty who had previously been in the care of youth protection. This partnership embodies our commitment to providing young people with the resources and support needed so they can reach their full potential in adulthood.
This project was funded as part of the 2024 call for proposals, through which the Fondation des jeunes de la DPJ supports innovative projects that help youths in care transitioning to adulthood, in Montreal and various regions of Quebec.
